Problem

People struggle with deciding what to eat every day

People struggle with deciding what to eat every day

The inspiration for this project came from my own struggle with deciding what to eat each day. Through 30 surveys, I discovered that 80% of people face the same issue. This is often due to an overwhelming number of options or a lack of inspiration when leftover ingredients aren’t sufficient to create a complete dish.

Set up goal

Give people ideas for their daily meals

After analyzing the interview materials, I identified the goal of this project: to provide daily menu inspiration, allowing people to choose dishes based on various elements tailored to their preferences.

Discovery

There are many factors that determine what users eat today.

users eat today.

To better understand the problem, I conducted interviews with 10 people and found that their meal choices are shaped by more than just taste or the ingredients in their fridge. Factors such as convenience, cost, and familiarity with specific dishes play a significant role in their decision-making process.

Deep insight

Four important points

I analyzed my findings and came up with the following four important points:

Target user

My target users are those who don’t know what to cook every day and don’t know what to eat when they go out.

Wireframe Design

People cannot determine their daily meals

Initially, I focused on utilizing leftover ingredients to inspire cooking ideas. I wanted users to easily search for and select the ingredients they have on hand. Based on my findings, I designed three main functions for the app:

  1. Ingredient Selection and Dish Generation: Users can either click on ingredient boxes or search for specific ingredients to generate dish suggestions.

  2. Cooking Tutorials: Users can select a generated dish and navigate to a tutorial page to learn how to prepare it.

  3. Random Inspiration: Users can explore randomly generated dish ideas for spontaneous inspiration.

Test the design

Improve effient of getting inspiration

After user test, participants responded positively to the idea. Many mentioned that they often search online for dish inspiration, but these methods are often inefficient and don’t always provide clear answers about what to eat. Flavorflow stands out by offering customized meal suggestions and providing store information for ingredients, making it both practical and efficient.

Discovery after testing

Features limitations

Using Figma's prototype feature, I tested my app and identified key insights.

  1. The app should adopt a selection-based approach, as users often struggle with deciding what to eat and benefit more from curated choices rather than searching manually.

  1. I discovered that many users are unable to find the ingredients or seasonings they need at nearby stores. Convenience is a critical factor in cooking, as people prefer not to travel far for ingredients.

  1. I realized that the app can also assist users when dining out by generating recipes that help decide which restaurant to visit. This makes the app versatile, catering not just to home cooks but also to those looking for dining options.

Final design

Shopping list and nearby store

After testing, I refine my design and add some features about my app.

1. Users can add ingredients and seasoning to shopping list in generate page.
2. Users can check which store near them can buy the ingredients on the shopping list interface.

Next step

Finding better solutions for selecting ingredients

Finding better solutions for selecting
ingredients

  1. Find what best way about filter function

  2. Add function that user can add ingredients to shopping list in video page

Conclusion

What user research taught me

I noticed that users often don’t explicitly share useful information during interviews. This requires designers to dig deeper into their stories, analyze their responses, and interpret underlying needs. Empathizing with users and viewing situations from their perspective can lead to more valuable insights.

Additionally, during user testing, I observed that different users sometimes offered completely opposing opinions. This highlights the importance of making informed judgments based on thorough analysis and research. Strengthening this ability to balance user feedback with design decisions is an area I aim to improve.
